Matthias Lammert, President of the State Parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate
On 18 May 2026, Matthias Lammert was elected President of the State Parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate. During the previous legislative term, he held the office of Vice-President. Prior to that, he held a number of political offices in Rhineland-Palatinate, such as Member of the State Parliament, spokesperson on home affairs for the CDU parliamentary group, deputy chair of the CDU parliamentary group and chair of several local government bodies in the Rhein-Lahn district.
Matthias Lammert was born on 28 June 1968 in Tübingen and currently lives in Diez. He is married, father of two adult children and has close ties to his home region in the Rhein-Lahn district. After his A-levels at the Staatliches Gymnasium Diez, he served in the German military (Bundeswehr) from 1988 to 1990, where he was trained as reserve lieutenant. He then went on to study law and political sciences at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. From 1999 to 2001, he worked as a research associate before he was elected into the State Parliament of Rhineland Palatinate for the first time in 2001.
Matthias Lammert was particularly shaped by the period of German reunification and European integration under Chancellor Helmut Kohl. These years had a lasting influence on him as did his experiences during his time in the Bundeswehr and the importance of a united Europe.
For many years, a key focus of his political work has been home affairs policy. As spokesperson on home affairs for the CDU parliamentary group, he dealt intensively with issues concerning internal security, the protection of the constitution and a functioning democracy. Until today, the police, volunteer fire brigades, emergency services and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) play an important role for him.
Activities on the societal level include his office as deputy chair of the Rhineland-Palatinate state association of the German War Graves Commission, as board member of the Europa Union Rhein-Lahn and his involvement with the Lions Club Diez. Matthias Lammert is actively involved in several associations. For example, he is member of the animal welfare association in Diez, the association of the volunteer fire brigade of Diez-Freiendiez or the theatre club Fairy-Tale Holzheim.
